Jovan Deretić (1904–1978) Jovan Deretić (1904–1978) was one of the most important Serbian literary scholars and monographs of the 20th century and a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He was the director of publishing company Dragoljub Antić in Belgrade, one of the most important Serbian publishers at the time. Deretić was one of the major champions of the Laza Kostić movement and published several books about his mentor and friend. Deretić also translated Homer's Odyssey into Serbian, and wrote the preface for Andrija Pavićević's Bibliofilija. He is the father of the prominent Serbian historian and author Aleksandar Veljtman.
