At Munich a number of hardened and very conservative element had a hold on power in the lodges and as such were in favour of the Illuminati. This is supported by the fact that in the so called Bavaria Lodge, the famous \"Schwarzenburg\" Chapter, a meeting was held to discuss the expulsion of two more hardliners although they backed down and allowed another candidate to become Worshipful Master. However, when Knigge decided to call a meeting of all German lodges under his leadership, in the form of a Grand Lodge in May 1776, the conservative element had the upper hand then and as such they caused the German Freemasons to rise against the Order. According to the official Grand Lodge history, the July troubles were caused by the expulsion of the confederation of 14 Bavarian Lodges from Freemasonry and the formation of the Order of the Illuminati in the Grand Lodge under Weishaupt, in imitation of the French Freemasonry.[14]
Further discord and conflict between Weishaupt and the conservative element was caused by a set of Bavarian members who had opposed Knigge even before the foundation of the Illuminati and who were genuinely loyal to the Rosicrucians. Many of these members of this faction were Freemasons. These men were led by Prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel.
